Protecting biodiversity and natural resources

Land use & biodiversity

We partner with landowners, farmers, research institutions, and communities to develop projects which support responsible land use, protect biodiversity and wildlife, and minimize our environmental impacts.

Dual use

We work with our landowners and partners to invest in dual-use projects which co-locate renewable energy projects with agricultural or land-use activities. By designing sites that support livestock grazing, pollinator habitats, and crop cultivation, we aim to preserve land, enhance soil health, and develop projects that maximize positive contribution to the environment and community.

Our research

AES is partnering with research institutions and organizations to understand how to incorporate agricultural production most effectively with solar projects. Some areas of research include crop growth, soil enhancement and promoting ecosystem services.

Pollinator habits

AES strives to create native pollinator habitats for vital species like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, and other pollinators. We carefully select vegetation for cover and buffers that support these species, promoting biodiversity and enhancing surrounding ecosystems.

Enriching soils

AES is committed to preserving farmland through low-impact construction practices, such as minimal grading and limited soil disturbance. We partner with local experts to enhance soil quality by planting native ground cover around solar panels. Additionally, we are exploring regional soil enhancement strategies to restore land productivity, ensuring that our operations contribute positively to long-term land sustainability.

Solar grazing

We collaborate with landowners and local ranchers to implement livestock grazing across our portfolio. This alternative vegetative management practice not only enhances land health but also creates new revenue streams for farmers, supporting sustainable land use and economic growth.

Biodiversity

AES aims to protect and enhance biodiversity, working with local partners to preserve our ecosystems and promote long-term environmental stewardship. From wildlife protection, land and coastal restoration, and reforestation efforts, we are building healthier and resilient ecosystems.

Coastal restoration

AES partners with local organizations to preserve and protect coastal wildlife and habitats. Through mangrove restoration in Panama, microplastic beach cleanups in Hawaii, and wetland enhancement in Southern California, we work to safeguard coastal ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.

Reforestation

AES is dedicated to reforestation as a key strategy for enhancing biodiversity and strengthening local ecosystems. By planting native trees and flora and restoring degraded lands, we help improve local air quality, support wildlife habitats, and promote community resilience.

Wildlife

By restoring native habitats around our sites, designing projects to avoid sensitive environmental areas, and partnering with conservation groups to protect wildlife, we support responsible land use and wildlife conservation practices.
