Advancing global decarbonization

Reducing emissions

We are taking actions to reduce emissions by transforming our portfolio and deploying greener energy solutions to match the exponential demands of data centers and customers in the US and beyond.

Our Ambitions

62030

Generation portfolio carbon intensity in line with a well-below 2˚C scenario

2040

Net-zero carbon emissions from electricity sales*

2050

Net zero carbon emissions for entire business portfolio*

Energy demand

AES is uniquely positioned to meet growing energy demand leveraging proven solutions to provide 24/7 power. With a diverse portfolio focused on renewables, storage, and natural gas we are providing a resilient and reliable grid for our customers, markets, and communities.

Portfolio transformation

AES is transforming its portfolio and reducing its emissions by phasing out coal and diversifying market energy portfolios with LNG and renewables. This shift improves carbon intensity and power generation efficiency while enhancing grid reliability and resilience.

Advanced emissions control technologies

We employ multiple air control technologies and continuously seek to improve power generation efficiency and reduce emissions. AES deploys advanced air quality systems, including SO2 scrubbers, low NOx burners, and filtration systems that remove fine particles from emissions. These technologies cut pollution while ensuring reliable power generation.

In 2024

6.8 GW

New contracts, signed or awarded, including renewables PPAs, data center load growth at US utilities, and retail supply for data centers

670 MW

Completed the construction of new combined cycle gas plant that will help Panama collectively reduce CO₂ emissions by more than 2.2 million tons annually

481 MW

Retired coal generation, for a total of 13.4 GW of coal exits announced or closed since 2017

* Actions assume new policies that facilitate transition to low emissions energy systems, such as a price on carbon. Includes scope 1 and 2 emissions for 2040 and Scope 3 for 2050.
