24/7 Carbon Free Energy from AES

The next frontier in sustainability is here

Be a part of the carbon-free energy future

    24/7 Carbon Free Energy

The next frontier in building a sustainable future is ensuring that carbon-free energy is the primary source for facilities, when and where they have load—100% carbon-free energy, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This is called 24/7 carbon-free energy.

AES is now providing this 24/7 carbon-free energy supply to Google.

We want to show you what a carbon-free future actually looks like.

    Meet a first-of-its-kind 24/7 carbon-free energy solution.

    Google Case Story

    How did we do it?

In 2020, Google set a world-leading goal to be 100% powered by clean energy on an hourly basis by 2030, knowing that a 24/7 carbon-free energy solution didn’t exist at the time. Download the case story to find out how we worked together to create a first-of-its-kind 24/7 carbon-free energy solution.

What it means to be a clean energy leader is continually evolving.

Why do we need 24/7 carbon-free energy?

Companies and organizations have been pursuing 100% renewable energy goals that strive to match the amount of renewable energy sourced to the amount of electricity consumed annually. This is usually done by entering into 100% clean energy power purchase agreements (PPAs) or purchasing renewable energy credits (RECs).

However, this traditional renewable energy procurement model is only an interim solution. Even if a company procures enough energy to match 100% of their annual consumption, they are still relying on carbon-based power when the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing. So, if the facility’s energy demands isn’t perfectly correlated with the generation profile (or load), on an hourly basis, the result is that as little as 40% of the facility’s actual electricity needs are met when carbon-free energy is produced.

If we want to create a carbon-free future, we need to change how we get our energy.

    How 24/7 carbon-free energy works

The new leading standard of 24/7 carbon-free energy focuses on purchasing round-the-clock clean energy each hour and on each regional grid where electricity consumption occurs. This way, demand is met on an hourly basis with a renewable energy and energy storage portfolio, custom created to meet the customer’s unique energy needs.

100% renewable energy targets are beneficial, but 24/7 carbon-free energy is transformational.

Today, hundreds of companies worldwide have committed to 100% renewable energy. Yet, there is significant work still to be done. So, what’s next?

Together with AES, a carbon-free future is within reach
